Philippians 4:13
"I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me."
What the verse actually means
Philippians 4:13 is used for inspiration and motivation for Christians. This makes you believe that with Jesus, anything is possible. It makes you think that you can conquer the world. But that is not the case. The problem with this Bible verse is that it is taken out of context. It doesn’t mean striving to become a better person and doing everything in Jesus’ name. No. This bible verse is simply to encourage weak Christians who are in difficult circumstances.
Why did Paul wrote that verse?
In prison, Paul wrote that verse for the Philippians church. While he was in prison, he was faced with an uneasy situation in which he was thrown in prison for preaching the word of God. He was very weak, cold, and hungry. The meaning behind this verse is that Paul wrote it to show that in whatever bad situation he went through, he learned how to be content through Christ. He had Jesus by his side to comfort him. He wasn’t alone.
The problem with contentment
There is a lot of research that explains why men are suiciding at a higher rate, why men are using drugs, and why men are doing poorly at school and why they are dropping out of school at a higher rate than women. Many men, especially secular men, try to find their contentment somewhere else where Jesus is not involved. Men think that if they drink alcohol, the pain they are feeling will go away. For men, knowing the reasons why men commit suicide at a higher rate is worrisome because they think that suicide is the only option they have to forget and to end the pain they are feeling. This is what the majority of men are facing in today’s society. This is an epidemic amongst men because the consequence of these horrible atrocities is that they don’t have Jesus. Jesus, among Christians, finds their contentment in Him. Living a life without Jesus leads to destruction and no satisfaction.
Christian advice
You must have Jesus in order to be content in whatever trial you are facing. Paul gave us an example of it. As Christians, Paul told us that in this earthly life we will have trials and tribulations. Our lives won’t become better once we have Jesus. In fact, God promises that our life on earth won’t become easier because we believe in him. No. Paul saw Jesus and walked with God, and yet he still faced tribulations during his life on earth. However, if we have Jesus in our lives, our lives will improve because He is the source of contentment in our lives. Jesus will be enough. Sometimes in life, things won’t go the way we hoped they would go. Once they don’t, our reaction should not be to whine and get mad at Jesus. After all, following Jesus means doing His will and not our own. But we must not let our feelings get the best of us and distract us from keeping our eyes on Jesus, because if we stay focused on the One who is with us, we will be content. He is with you. You will never be alone.
Stay firm in the faith and God bless you!
